Why Oxford Law students?

Unlike Section A, Section B essays are reviewed by tutors, who are looking at the quality and style of the student's argument and essay.

This is particularly relevant because Oxford tutors review admissions essays.

Our Oxford Law students have spent years writing essays and having them reviewed by Oxford Law tutors, giving them direct experience of the kind of analytical writing, argument and structure those tutors value.

An example review

A short extract from a student essay, with some of the reviewer's notes. Your own review covers the whole essay in this detail.

It is often said that the law must always be obeyed, since a society in which individuals choose which rules to follow would quickly collapse into disorder. This argument has obvious force.¹ However, it assumes that the only alternative to complete obedience is complete lawlessness, which is plainly false². History offers many examples of principled disobedience that strengthened rather than weakened the rule of law. The suffragettes broke the law repeatedly, and few would now say they were wrong to do so. Their actions were public, nonviolent and directed at a specific injustice, and they accepted the penalties that followed.³ Therefore breaking the law is justified whenever a person believes a law to be unjust.⁴

Note 1

“This argument has obvious force.”

Good instinct to concede the strongest version of the opposing view before answering it. This is exactly the move that separates a strong Section B essay from a one sided one.

Note 2

“which is plainly false”

You assert this rather than showing it. One sentence naming a middle position, say lawful protest or conscientious objection, would prove the false dichotomy instead of announcing it.

Note 3

“The suffragettes broke the law repeatedly...”

Your best paragraph. Notice that the three features you pick out, publicity, nonviolence and accepting the penalty, are doing the real work: they are the conditions your argument actually needs.

Note 4

“Therefore breaking the law is justified whenever a person believes a law to be unjust.”

This conclusion is much wider than what you proved. Your own example required public, nonviolent action against a specific injustice with penalties accepted; sincere belief alone was never enough. Tighten the conclusion to match your evidence.

Overall assessment

The essay argues well for most of its length and then gives that work away in the final sentence. Your handling of the counterargument in the first paragraph is genuinely strong, and the suffragette example is well chosen because it carries its own criteria. The gap is between what you demonstrated and what you concluded...
